INTAKE INTERVIEW
JM is the second child out of three, which all live alongside their parents, their father, a government employee, and their mother, a CCTV Operator. Only her mother works full time. Although her mother works mostly during night shifts.
According to JM’s mother, she was born through a caesarean delivery after a normal pregnancy like the rest of JM’s siblings. Her mother also recalled that JM had asthma when she was a baby but it disappeared overtime. Growing up, she never had any trouble with keeping up with toddlers of her age in terms of development in physical, social, cognitive, and emotional areas. There were no difficulties in these areas that were observed before she started schooling.
JM states that she has no recollection of most memories from her childhood but she remembers that she got along well with other children and her family. She performed well in school even though she moved into a different residence and school twice during her elementary schooling. During that time, her parents separated but she wasn’t aware of it at the time and only found out about it a few months later. When she started high school, she performed consistently well until she graduated high school. Since she valued being a part of her group of friends, when it was time for college applications, she considered where most of her friends were going so she ended up in the same university as them. When she enrolled, she didn’t have a particular program in mind. She wasn’t planning on taking up a psychology program. Nonetheless, she is currently performing well in her academics.
As previously mentioned, her parents did separate before that. Consequently, JM and the rest of her family lived without her father for a short period of time. Despite this, her parents are together until now. She and her siblings, an older sister and a younger brother, have a normal sibling relationship. Lately, she feels annoyed at how her parents tolerate her older sister’s behavior which she thinks is wrong. Whenever she and her sister argue about something trivial, she tends to “be the bigger person” and let the argument go once they fail to resolve the problem after talking about it.
JM views herself as someone that gets along well with other people. She knows how to adjust herself to a new environment easily. Since she values her relationships, she tries hard to maintain them. She thinks the best way to do this is by always initiating communication. However, she felt like it was difficult to open up because there were times when she felt like her mother wasn’t interested in what she was saying, and her family didn’t take it seriously when she said that she wanted to pursue acting. Because of this, when she is by herself, she tends to overthink and get intense feelings of loneliness because she wants to open up to the people around her but is held back by thoughts of not being taken seriously. She also feels she doesn’t do enough and thinks can do more but she doesn’t try to because she’s having difficulties identifying her strengths since her family disregarded her interest and the possibility of improving her skills.
APTITUDE TEST
Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS)
Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS) is a comprehensive test battery that measures 8 abilities related to performing a job. One of these is Mechanical Reasoning which refers to how well you apply mechanical principles and the laws of physics. Currently, JM’s mechanical reasoning is a little above average compared to most people of her educational level. For Spatial Relations, she is able to think in a three-dimensional perspective and visualize the position of objects most of the time. She is also able to recognize and discriminate perceived symbols and objects more quickly and accurately than the average person.
In general, her ability to use and understand words, as well her language abilities are decent. She is able to comprehend concepts expressed in words well, scoring a little above average in this ability. Her ability to recognize and use English grammar, punctuation, and capitalization correctly is high and her vocabulary is broad. This is evident when she speaks and writes in English in class.
However, JM struggled in solving basic arithmetic operations and understanding simple mathematical concepts like fractions. Her numerical ability is slightly behind most people of her educational level.
Lastly, her hands are able to move steadily and accurately at an average rate. All of her handwritten works are tidy and her handwriting is consistently legible.
Overall, all of her scores fit the criteria of each career cluster in the CAPS Career Profile Sheet. This makes her eligible to work in Science, Technology, Arts, Services, and Business-centric careers. She can also pursue careers in Consumer Economics, Outdoor, Clerical, and Communication.
Revised Beta Examination (RBE)
Revised Beta Examination (RBE) is a test battery composed of 6 nonverbal tests. Each subtest measures a specific set of cognitive abilities. JM performed slightly low in the test that measures foresight, planning, anticipatory skill, and the capacity to follow. This indicates that she is more focused on what she is doing in the present, rather than thinking ahead.
Meanwhile, her skills that are associated with visual motor coordination, discriminatory skills, sensitivity to details, judgement, new learning, associative flexibility are all average. This indicates that she is skilled enough to perceive a set of new objects, identify them one by one and find a common thing that associates the objects with each other. She is also skilled in differentiating which object does not belong to a group. For cognitive skills such as abstract reasoning, logical reasoning, and reflective thinking, she scored above average. All in all, her weighted score on the RBE is 64, which makes her IQ at an average level for her age.
Currently, she is doing well in her academics. She does well in her examinations and output when she is given enough time to prepare for it. It is easy for her to understand the concept once it is thoroughly explained to her. She does not have any difficulty recalling information after she studies a material more than once. Test results also indicate that her levels of skills and abilities can accommodate the demands of the career she is taking. On the other hand, she is having trouble managing her time and planning when to study ahead since she works long hours in her internship and her commute is unpredictable.
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TEST
BarOn EQ:i-S
BarOn EQ:i-S is a self-report test that aims to measure an individual’s emotional and social intelligence and provide an estimate of their emotional-social intelligence. According to her test scores, JM’s intrapersonal skills need to be improved. Since she has a low understanding of her strengths and weaknesses, she ends up not being able to express herself effectively. This may be due to the fact that while she was growing up, she witnessed her eldest sister be responsible for herself at a young age. Her sister was acknowledged more because of this by their family and relatives. At home, she tries to be independent since she is the middle child, however she relies on others more than herself in other settings. Aside from this, she is not aware of how others feel. She may come off as insensitive to others but it is only because she does not know how to express her empathy properly. She keeps a small circle of friends but she maintains healthy relationships with them. Sometimes, she fails to manage and control her emotions effectively that it results in emotional stress. Moreover, she finds it difficult to cope with self-induced stress and external problems, and the abrupt change that resulted from it. Whenever her family had problems while she was growing up, she felt that they were solved eventually. This is why despite her problem with managing her emotions, she still tries to maintain a positive outlook on life and works for desirable outcomes out of her problems. She also feels content with herself, others, and life in general.
Overall, her emotional and social intelligence has room for improvement. Her current level of emotional-social intelligence is enough for her to comfortably socialize with others and feel satisfied with herself. However, her score in the Positive Impression Scale is elevated, which might mean that she tried to respond positively on purpose. On the other hand, it might also mean that she answered honestly to the best of her ability.
Emotions Profile Index
Emotions Profile Index is another self-report test that is based on eight emotional dimensions on an individual’s emotional function. According to JM’s scores, she trusts people too easily. Since JM grew up in a loving family, wherein she was free to tell her parents anything without any repercussions, she expects other people to be the same and believes that people are trustworthy until proven otherwise. Because of this she has many friends because her friends likewise think that they could trust her.
In general, she enjoys interacting with people and shows a positive side of herself that attracts friends. When it comes to new people she meets, she does not show any judgment but rather accept the person for what she sees. However, when a person betrays the trust she gave them, she is likely to confront them right away as JM is a person who deals with her problems straightforwardly. This is one way she keeps the things in her life in order. Because even though she is trustful, she still tends to be wary and think carefully before making a final decision. Her feelings of anxiety over a situation is what drives her to assess the situation carefully before coming up with solutions. This decision making process helps give her a sense of control over her life. However, when things go wrong, she dwells on her feelings of hopelessness and takes a while before she lets these feelings pass.
Currently, JM is well-liked and gets along with everyone. However, she is trying to be more assertive after encountering misunderstandings among friends. She tries to be organized but when things do not go her way, she gets easily stressed and finds it difficult to cope with the stress.
PERSONALITY TEST
Basic Personality Inventory
The Basic Personality Inventory is a multiphasic personality inventory that has 11 personality scales and 1 critical item scale. It is used to identify sources of maladjustment and personal strengths of an individual. From the test results, it can be seen that JM interacts well with her environment. In terms of socialization, she enjoys being in the company of others and thinks of everyone highly until proven otherwise. She trusts in the ability of the people she works with when it is needed while at the same time believe in her own ability. She believes that rules are set for a good reason and thinks that there are consequences to every good and bad action. As a result, she follows trivial rules such as using the right entrance and exit doors, and finds it annoying when other people cannot follow suit. Everywhere she goes, she cleans up after herself and encourages others to do the same.
Since JM is attending university, she rarely misses classes and is always on time. She rarely gets sick and has no serious complaints about her health. When she is confronted by sudden problems, she maintains her composure and takes personal control. She does not bask in the feelings of disappointment when she is faced with failure and keeps an optimistic attitude towards the future while being realistic. When talking to friends, she does not sugarcoat her words because she thinks her intent is more important.
Overall, her general behavior would be perceived as normal to the majority of people since her actions are usually socially acceptable.
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory
Known as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the MMPI is a test that will measure an individual’s personality traits and assess their psychopathology. JM approached the test in a defensive manner. However, the validity scales showed that it is valid. Her profile also showed low anxiety regarding her health and body. She is aware about the state of her health and she does not have any serious complaints about it. She feels comfortable with herself and she acts femininely enough. Her profile also suggests that she is outgoing and sociable, and enjoys being in the company of other people. She likes to joke around with people and be the one to initiate conversations. However, she also values her time alone. She appears to rarely feels dissatisfied in life and sees the world in a positive manner.
Being an undergraduate student, she is a perfectionist when it comes to her tasks. Usually, she arrives to class on time or even earlier. For her groupmates, she may come off as assertive when it comes to delegating tasks to work on but it is only because she is anxious of the consequences of what might happen if they are unable to meet the deadline since she is a graduating student. She is fairly motivated when it comes to doing schoolwork, as her sister is also a bright student and everyone in her family acknowledges this. When she is working, she can get the job easily done because of her ability to concentrate on her task.
Overall, her profile shows that she generally show behavior patterns that are considered as normal to the majority of people.
COMPLETE REPORT
JM’s IQ is at an average level for her age. Her visual motor coordination, discriminatory skills, sensitivity to details, judgement, new learning, associative flexibility are average. Meanwhile, her cognitive skills are above average. She possesses adequate reasoning and reflective thinking. Her language abilities are decent and her vocabulary is broad. Her ability to use words, punctuation, and capitalization is high. However, she struggles in solving arithmetic operations. Her skill set and abilities make her suited to work in various fields including Science, Technology, Arts, and Services among many others. Her level of intelligence is enough for her to easily learn new skills and adapt in new environments.
On the other hand, her emotional and social intelligence has room for improvement. JM trusts people too easily and she enjoys interacting with other people. However, she may come off as insensitive to how others feel. She easily gets stressed and finds it difficult to cope with it. She is timid and prefers to think carefully before making a decision. She prefers to feel like she has control over her life. This is why when she is grouped with other people, she is likely to lead the group. She prefers to work with people who share the same mindset with her when it comes to the goals of their group. She can establish healthy social relationships with other people but she has a tendency to withdraw herself from it. She is anxious of being too dependent on other people which is why she would prefer to distance herself. Because of this, she would feel sorry for herself and become self-conscious and insecure. She doesn’t like to voice out her needs and would rather keep it to herself. As a result, she tends to keep everything to herself and this leads to her excessive emotional reactivity and lack of control.
She is satisfied with her family relationships although it was noted that her family is not good in expressing affection and this upsets her. For JM, her mother’s presence in her life is much more felt than her father’s but that is not a severe concern for her because she can see that her father is doing everything he can.
Diagnostic Impression
Overall, JM’s case is found to be normal. Her intellectual and social functioning are average. There is marked distress in her emotional functioning but it doesn’t cause significant impairment that it already affects her day to day life. She does not meet any criteria from the DSM-5.
